Each spring we look forward to what has become a signature event of the Pioneer Library System and the Pioneer Library System Foundation – The Big Read. This community-wide celebration of reading underscores the mission of the Pioneer Library System to connect you to the joy reading.

This year we welcome Tobias Wolff, author of our 2013 Big Read novel, Old School. We are hosting a private reception with Mr. Wolff on Wednesday, April 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Foundation board member Jim Bowers and his wife Lisa. On hand will be a specially-created menu of heavy hors d’oeuvres by the former executive chef for the Oklahoma Governor’s Mansion, Chef Derek Nettles, paired with wines from Joe’s Place Fine Wines and Spirits in Norman. Chef Nettles will be on hand to demonstrate preparation of his original creations.

Tickets for the event are limited, and are $100 each. The evening will take place at the Bowers’ home, located at 14701 South Pennsylvania Avenue, in Oklahoma City.  To purchase your ticket, please call (405) 701-7662 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Pioneer Library System Foundation was formed three years ago to financially enhance the programs and services of our 10 hometown libraries. One of our first commitments was to offer fundraising events centered on authors and literature. We have enjoyed spring visits from Tim O’Brien and Amy Tan who authored our Big Read selections in 2011 and 2012. Our Big Read programs in 2012 garnered the Community Leadership Award from the Oklahoma Humanities Council.
